Why Recycle?

What is recycling? It is the process of collecting materials that have been discard and are considered waste and reprocessing them for reuse. Recycling involves using the core elements of products, such as plastic water bottles, pallets, paper, aluminum cans, pallets, and cell phones, and recycling the raw materials to manufacture as new goods.

cans_webWhen paper is recycled, the recycling plant removes the paper from recycling containers and separates it into types and grades. The paper is then shredded and baled to ship to a paper mill. At the mill, the paper is washed to remove inks, plastic film, staples, and glue. The paper is mixed with water to create a slurry. Different materials are added to the slurry to create different types of paper products. Large rollers are used to spread the slurry into thin sheets, where it is left to dry before being rolled up, cut, and sent back out into the marketplace.

It reduces pollution
. Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and reduces water and energy consumption. The major fossil fuels which are used in manufacturing gasoline and coal all emit harmful greenhouse gases and any reduction in the consumption of these fuels is a positive for the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average office worker uses two pounds of paper per day. On average, every American consumes approximately 730 pounds of paper each year.

Conserve landfill space
. When trash eventually breaks down, it releases greenhouse gas methane and pollutants into the air and water. A major portion of the landfill space in use today is filled with materials that could have been recycled. According to the EPA, 40% of all waste in landfills is paper. Landfill space is at a premium today and any reduction benefits the environment.

Protect your privacy. If your employees are throwing your paper documents into the dumpster, that information is accessible by anyone.
